The Washington Women's Rugby Football Club (WWRFC) was founded in 1978 in Washington, DC. Also known as the Furies, the team was originally formed from a nucleus of five skilled and hard working rugby players, and quickly developed into a highly competitive club side team. Over the years, other skilled and dedicated athletes have replaced the now-retired initial members. These new players share the same intensity and love for the game as the team's originators. The team has a healthy membership, fielding a roster of 20 to 30 players since 1978. Currently, the Furies are 30+ strong, and have consistently been able to field both an A- and B-side team.

The Furies play at the most competitive level of club rugby, placing at or near the top of the local Potomac Rugby Union (PRU) and the Mid-Atlantic Rugby Football Union (MARFU). Since 1997, the Furies have been one of three teams representing MARFU at the National Championship tournament. The club has also ranked among the top 12 teams in the nation for the past three years.

As an additional testament to the high-caliber rugby found within the Washington Furies, two players, Nancy Fitz and Jen Renne, are members of the United States National team (U.S. Eagles). Both women played extensively in the 1998 World Cup, and Nancy Fitz was recently selected as the National Team Captain. The Furies also have a consistent showing at the Inter-Territorial Tournament (ITTs) held annually in December, sending several members to play for the MARFU team. This event pits select side teams from each rugby union together in a weekend tournament, and serves as a proving ground for future Eagles.

The Furies are also proud to host the Annual Capital Women's Ruggerfest, the largest women's spring tournament, which attracts top teams from the East Coast. This year the team celebrates Ruggerfest's 21st Anniversary. For more information on Ruggerfest, click here.

In the summer months, the Washington Furies are very involved in 7's rugby. The team competes in several tournaments throughout the summer, running the circuit from Cape Cod to Cape Fear. For more information on 7's, click here.

The Furies are also a traveling group. Along with extensive touring throughout the United States for the past ten years, the team has also begun to travel abroad. In 1997, the Furies toured France, taking in the sights from Paris to Nice, while compiling a 2-1 record. In 1999, the team ventured to Ireland, returning home undefeated in both matches. This is an exciting time for the Washington Furies!

Furies Song: Delta Dawn, the Helen Reddy version

CHORUS
Delta Dawn what's that flower you have on?
Could it be a faded rose from days gone by?
And did I hear you say he was meetin' you here today?
To take you to his mansion in the sky?

She's 41 and her daddy still calls her baby
All the folks 'round Brownsville say she's crazy
'Cause she walks downtown with her suitcase in her hand
Lookin' for a mysterious dark-haired man.

In her younger days they called her Delta Dawn
The prettiest woman you ever laid eyes on
Then a man of low degree stood by her side
Promised her he'd take her for his bride

CHORUS

CHORUS and fade
